5 Video Formats That Work on TikTok & Reels
The five short-form video formats Sydney brands actually get results from on TikTok and Instagram Reels, and how to shoot all five in a single day.
Most brands we meet in Sydney are not short of ideas. They are short of formats — repeatable shapes a video can take, so that a shoot day produces a month of content instead of one hero edit that took three weeks to approve.
These are the five that consistently earn watch time for our clients, and the reason each one works.
1. The three-second cold open
The first frame decides everything. Not the first five seconds — the first one. Motion, an unexpected angle, or something mid-action beats a logo sting every time, because the feed is a scroll and your competition is the thumb.
Practically this means starting on the action, not building to it. If you are filming a venue, do not open on the empty room and pan to the crowd. Open on the crowd. The establishing shot goes second, or not at all.
2. Process, compressed
People will watch a thing being made far longer than they will watch a thing being sold. A dish plated, a car detailed, a room installed, a part machined — compressed to twenty seconds with clean sound design.
This format works because it has an implicit promise: there is an end state, and you have to stay to see it. That is the cheapest retention mechanism available, and it requires no script.
3. The talking-head answer
One question, one answer, forty seconds, captions burned in. Pick questions your customers actually ask — the ones your sales team answers on the phone every week.
Two things make or break this format. Captions, because most of the feed is watched on mute. And a real answer, because a non-answer reads as an ad and gets treated like one.
4. Before and after, honestly
Structurally the strongest format there is: it opens with a problem the viewer recognises and closes with a resolution. It also carries the most risk to your credibility, because an over-graded “after” is obvious and expensive to your reputation.
Shoot both states in the same light, at the same time of day, from the same position. The restraint is what makes it persuasive.
5. The single-shot walkthrough
One unbroken move through a space — a venue, a showroom, a build. No cuts. Works because the absence of edits reads as proof: nothing was hidden between frames.
This is the format most improved by drone videography, which lets a single move start outside a building and finish inside it.
Shooting all five in one day
The reason to think in formats rather than videos is scheduling. Five formats, three subjects, one location and one day of shooting produces enough vertical content to post two or three times a week for a month.
That only works if the shot list is built around the formats before anyone arrives on site — which is the actual difference between a productive shoot day and an expensive one. Our social media content packages are built around exactly this: one day on location, a month of content out the other end.
What to do with this
Pick two formats, not five. Shoot them properly, post them for a month, and look at retention rather than likes — retention tells you whether the format is working, likes tell you whether the subject was popular.
If you want a second opinion on which two suit your brand, book a content shoot and we will build the shot list with you.
